Cottonwood Lakes -- day 2

We slept the night without any interruption from bears or marmots. I was up at sun-up and enjoyed the morning.

Once everyone was up, we broke camp and took a hike. We decided to hike up the mountain face on the west side of Lake 4 you see in the picture above.

That's the goal. Fantastic blue sky!!

From half way up.

Some of the young men had to stop at the half way point. Josh, Jarrod, Adam and Trent went to the top. From the top of the ridge, the were able to view the back of the Sequora National Park.

Lakes 4 & 5 from the top of the hike.

After the hike, we grabbed our gear and hiked out

This is looking at the road on the hillside we had to drive up and down.

Hiking into Cottonwood Lakes

After the river rafting, we drove to Lone Pine (on the 395) on the eastern Sierras. We camped the night at a campground near Lone Pine. In the morning, the entire party separated with the older young men hiking up Mount Whiney and the other hiking up to Cottonwoods Lakes - south of Whitney. The Cottonwood group was comprised of (by order of the picture below) Trent, Sam, Clark, Jarrod, Jordan and Adam with Josh and Rick as leaders.
The trail begins

Be had to navigate some switchbacks.

Once we crested the trail, we came upon a beautiful meadow. A few of them began singing "The Hill are Alive" from the Sound of Music. It was very beautiful. Very green with various colors of wild flowers.

This is the west shore of #3 of the 5 Cottonswood Lakes. If you look closely, you can see a waterfall in the green area and the trail just to the right.

This is where we set up camp. It is between Cottonwood Lake #4 and 5. There is some blue sky in the background but just as we got our tents up, it began to rain. It lasted about 2 hours.

Once the rain let up, some fished and some explored the area.

This is a view of Lakes 4 & 5. The 2 little dots on this side of the #4 lake at some of our young men.

This tree was leaning against this boulder making a easy climb.

This looking to the east. The lake is #2. You can see there is snow left over even at this level.

Lake #2 on the left with #3 on the right.

Josh jumped from the rock to the snow. Adam followed.

Though the water is crystal clear, drinking it directly can make you very sick. We had to pumped all our drinking water through a filter. Everyone took turns. This was mine.

Another snow field.

Rafting - Lawnchair float

On July 24th, Josh, Jarrod and Rick went with the young men in the ward on a white water river trip on the Southern Kern River. When we stopped on the first day, they invited us to practice the "lawnchair position". This is the position we are to be take in the event we fall out of the raft in the rapids - which some did.

Rock Wall Climbing

We did some climbing on Saturday at an indoor climbing place. They all did well. No falls or broken bones. I really had a problem getting to the top - fear of heights. But I did it a couple times with the encouragement (harrassment - name calling) from the boys.

She is BEAUTIFUL!

We had the blessing of being with Katelynn, Nathan and Jennifer for the weekend. She is a very good baby. She slept most the time. Her hair looks different from the photos. It is not as red - more of the strawberry blonde that Nathan talked about originally. Very beautiful!

Jarrod gets award

Jarrod was awarded the Green Medallion at his junior high school for Literary Arts. Each teacher picks 1 outstanding student from each class for this award. This is a honor for him. However, he has straight "A"'s in all subjects except for a "B+" in .... yep, English. Go figure.
